Parmi ses milliers de lecteurs, le petit Jean Van Hamme, 7 ans. Par sa tenue voulue exemplaire, amidonn\u00e9e d\u2019esprit scout, la bande dessin\u00e9e belge tranquillise les \u00e9ducateurs. Elle devient un puissant produit d\u2019exportation et un bon palliatif \u00e0 l\u2019importation des strips nord-am\u00e9ricaines. L\u2019auteur de bande dessin\u00e9e est alors un pigiste attach\u00e9 \u00e0 un ou plusieurs organes de presse. Pour des raisons alimentaires, Paul Cuvelier multiplie les vignettes de CORENTIN, FLAMME D\u2019ARGENT, WAPI ou LINE. La r\u00e9daction lui demande de retoucher &#8211; c\u2019est \u00e0 dire rhabiller &#8211; ses personnages. BARBARELLA p\u00e9n\u00e8tre dans le domaine &#8211; jusque-l\u00e0 circonscrit aux enfants \u2013 du bel album de bande dessin\u00e9e. Aux yeux des censeurs, c\u2019est l\u00e0 que r\u00e9side sa v\u00e9ritable perversion. Elle surgit au moment o\u00f9 l\u2019album de bande dessin\u00e9e, sur le march\u00e9 francophone, devient peu \u00e0 peu le v\u00e9hicule de la bande dessin\u00e9e au d\u00e9triment des p\u00e9riodiques. Bard\u00e9es d\u2019interdictions <a href=\"#_epo3\" name=\"_eporef3\">[3]<\/a>, BARBARELLA devient l\u2019\u00e9g\u00e9rie des clubs des amis de la bande dessin\u00e9e et des partisans d\u2019une bande libre. Son cr\u00e9ateur, Jean-Claude Forest, r\u00eave de pouvoir s\u2019adresser, sans fard, \u00e0 d\u2019autres adultes <a href=\"#_epo4\" name=\"_eporef4\">[4]<\/a>. Par l\u2019entremise de son \u00e9pouse, ancienne mod\u00e8le de Paul Cuvelier, il est mis en contact avec l\u2019auteur de CORENTIN. L\u2019apparent r\u00e9alisme des figures de Cuvelier pla\u00eet \u00e0 Jean Van Hamme pour qui la bande dessin\u00e9e est avant tout un cin\u00e9ma de papier <a href=\"#_epo5\" name=\"_eporef5\">[5]<\/a>. Ce dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 de la haute \u00e9cole SOLVAY, ambitieux et s\u00fbr de lui, contraste avec l\u2019artiste r\u00e9serv\u00e9 et rong\u00e9 par les doutes. Quelques verres plus tard, ce dernier confie \u00e0 Van Hamme l\u2019envie de mettre en images un r\u00e9cit \u00e9rotique. Prenant la balle au bond, mais craignant l\u2019\u00e9cueil pornographique, il soumet \u00e0 son a\u00een\u00e9 un synopsis habill\u00e9 de mythologie grecque, avec ses centaures, ses amazones et ses myst\u00e8res dionysiaques. L\u2019artiste ne se d\u00e9monte pas, et renoue, comme Ingres avant lui, avec le lin\u00e9aire classique des vases grecs. Paul Cuvelier aime dessiner les corps, autant les poils d\u2019un sexe que les cils d\u2019un regard. Mais pour le produit EPOXY, Cuvelier se bride et offre, page apr\u00e8s page, des nus laiteux aux organes g\u00e9nitaux effac\u00e9s. C\u2019est un n\u00e9o-classicisme tr\u00e8s \u00e9loign\u00e9 des v\u00e9ritables temples grecs ou romains polychromes. Depuis la fin des ann\u00e9es 50, les arts plastiques rompent avec le dogme du tout abstrait et renouent avec le figuratif. L\u2019artiste trompe l\u2019ennui en donnant aux personnages les traits de ses proches, transformant EPOXY en roman \u00e0 clef. \u00c0 court d\u2019argent, Paul Cuvelier ne parvient pas \u00e0 se faire payer par son surr\u00e9aliste libraire-\u00e9diteur. Quant \u00e0 Jean Van Hamme, il est agac\u00e9 par les retards et tr\u00e9pigne d\u2019impatience de voir son premier ouvrage enfin imprim\u00e9. Lors d\u2019un de ses passages \u00e0 Paris, \u00c9ric Losfeld aurait coinc\u00e9 Paul Cuvelier dans une chambre d\u2019h\u00f4tel et ne l\u2019aurait laiss\u00e9 partir qu\u2019une fois les derni\u00e8res planches encr\u00e9es <a href=\"#_epo7\" name=\"_eporef7\">[7]<\/a>. Le sc\u00e9nariste, le dessinateur et l\u2019\u00e9diteur sont en p\u00e9tard <a href=\"#_epo8\" name=\"_eporef8\">[8]<\/a>. La mal\u00e9diction autour d\u2019EPOXY ne s\u2019arr\u00eate pas l\u00e0. L\u2019album est distribu\u00e9 en mai 1968, et, face aux gr\u00e8ves et incidents, passe inaper\u00e7u. Jean Van Hamme, en contact avec le r\u00e9dacteur en chef du Journal TINTIN, Michel Greg, participe \u00e0 la r\u00e9daction du catalogue. C\u00f4t\u00e9 journal SPIROU, Andr\u00e9 Franquin a jet\u00e9 l\u2019uniforme de groom par dessus la haie et son ami, le r\u00e9dacteur en chef Yvan Delporte, vient d\u2019\u00eatre limog\u00e9. Jean Van Hamme, devenu cadre chez PHILIPS, saisit l\u2019occasion pour glisser sa candidature. Selon l\u2019int\u00e9ress\u00e9, ce serait sa collaboration \u00e0 EPOXY qui aurait motiv\u00e9 le refus de la pudibonde maison DUPUIS <a href=\"#_epo10\" name=\"_eporef10\">[10]<\/a>. C\u2019est un autre r\u00e9aliste, Thierry Martens, qui prend le poste et laisse, peu \u00e0 peu, Raoul Cauvin infiltrer le journal. Adoub\u00e9 par Greg, et parvenu aux manettes de CORENTIN, Jean Van Hamme entre au Journal TINTIN. Sous le masque de la jeunesse, Van Hamme, Cauvin et Martens vont poursuivre la politique conservatrice et paternaliste de leurs employeurs. Son ami Jacques Martin, sans doute par contagion, r\u00e9alise une \u00e9tonnante aventure d\u2019ALIX : LE DERNIER SPARTIATE, qui d\u00e9borde largement des pr\u00e9occupations des petits lecteurs. Dans le sillage d\u2019EPOXY, le fran\u00e7ais Jacques Tardi vient pr\u00e9senter un projet de bande adulte \u00e0 Eric Losfeld. En Italie, de nombreux auteurs de bandes dessin\u00e9es de format poche destin\u00e9es aux adultes &#8211; les FUMETTI NERI &#8211; se servent d\u2019EPOXY, comme d\u2019un catalogue de poses <a href=\"#_epo11\" name=\"_eporef11\">[11]<\/a>. Le futur dessinateur de THORGAL, le polonais Grezgorz Rosinski, de passage \u00e0 Paris, casse sa tirelire pour acheter l\u2019ouvrage.
