Philippe \u00e9tait alors occup\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9diger l\u2019une des premi\u00e8res monographies consacr\u00e9es \u00e0 Paul Cuvelier. Il interrogea celui qui fut le sc\u00e9nariste de plusieurs BD que dessina Paul, notamment les s\u00e9ries \u00ab\u00a0Line\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Flamme d\u2019Argent\u00a0\u00bb. D\u2019une part, mes occupations ici ne me laissent gu\u00e8re de loisirs, et, d\u2019autre part\u2026 tout cela est bien loin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En fait, je n\u2019ai pas grand chose \u00e0 ajouter \u00e0 ce que j\u2019ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 racont\u00e9 \u00e0 ce propos\u00a0: je connaissais Paul de longue date car il avait illustr\u00e9, tout au d\u00e9but de \u00ab\u00a0Tintin\u00a0\u00bb, des contes\u2026 \u00e9crits par ma fianc\u00e9e de l\u2019\u00e9poque<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>, devenue Madame Greg ensuite. Mais nous n\u2019avions jamais travaill\u00e9 ensemble.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C\u2019est Christiane Godefroid, r\u00e9dactrice en chef du journal \u00ab\u00a0Line\u00a0\u00bb, qui nous a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 de former un tandem en vue de cr\u00e9er le personnage de Line elle-m\u00eame. Paul r\u00e9alisait \u00ab\u00a0Corentin\u00a0\u00bb de son c\u00f4t\u00e9. Il avait \u00e9crit lui-m\u00eame les premi\u00e8res histoires, mais son esprit \u00e9tait bien davantage \u00e0 la peinture et \u00e0 la sculpture. En fait, et ceci a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 vrai, Paul Cuvelier d\u00e9testait la bande dessin\u00e9e. Il n\u2019en lisait jamais et n\u2019en faisait que pour financer l\u2019autre partie de sa vie\u00a0: celle du peintre et du chercheur en Art pur.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-13278-1-1-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce\" data-index=\"8\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">C\u2019est donc pour se faciliter la vie qu\u2019il avait fait appel \u00e0 une dame de Mons<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>, r\u00e9gion dont il \u00e9tait originaire, pour \u00e9crire \u00ab\u00a0Le Poignard Magique\u00a0\u00bb. La dame se piquait de savoir raconter pour les enfants, et a imagin\u00e9 une histoire de pirates, de maharadjahs et d\u2019exotisme, o\u00f9 elle avan\u00e7ait au petit bonheur, sans plan pr\u00e9\u00e9tabli. Paul dessinait au fur et \u00e0 mesure du texte qu\u2019il recevait. Et puis, la dame a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 se d\u00e9sint\u00e9resser de la chose, ne sachant plus tr\u00e8s bien comment s\u2019en sortir. Paul, m\u00eame s\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas fou de BD, \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s scrupuleux. Il s\u2019est rendu compte que l\u2019histoire allait devenir idiote quand il a re\u00e7u du texte o\u00f9 la dame faisait revenir Corentin en Europe, \u00e0 Mons, et que des bandits se d\u00e9guisaient dans un faux \u00ab\u00a0Doudou\u00a0\u00bb, le dragon du carnaval local, \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on d\u2019un cheval de Troie. Il s\u2019est senti incapable de dessiner \u00e7a. Il s\u2019en est ouvert \u00e0 Tibet, avec d\u00e9sespoir. Tibet a rigol\u00e9 (interrogez-le, lui\u00a0!) et a pr\u00e9conis\u00e9 de m\u2019appeler s\u00e9ance tenante. Il m\u2019a amen\u00e9 Paul le soir-m\u00eame et, partant de ce qui existait d\u00e9j\u00e0, j\u2019ai bricol\u00e9 la fin de la premi\u00e8re partie du \u00ab\u00a0Poignard\u00a0\u00bb et j\u2019ai mont\u00e9 enti\u00e8rement la deuxi\u00e8me partie.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"panel-13278-1-1-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-last-child\" data-index=\"9\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_image_attachment&quot;:false,&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\">\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moi non plus, je ne me sentais pas \u00e0 l\u2019aise avec \u00ab\u00a0Corentin\u00a0\u00bb, et c\u2019est d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but que Paul et moi avons envisag\u00e9 de faire autre chose. Outre \u00ab\u00a0Line\u00a0\u00bb, il y a eu \u00ab\u00a0Flamme d\u2019Argent\u00a0\u00bb, qui \u00e9tait beaucoup plus \u00ab\u00a0notre truc\u00a0\u00bb<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a>. Pour \u00ab\u00a0Corentin\u00a0\u00bb, j\u2019essayais surtout de fournir \u00e0 Paul des occasions de dessiner des choses qu\u2019il aimait. Dans \u00ab\u00a0Line\u00a0\u00bb aussi d\u2019ailleurs\u00a0: le personnage du \u00ab\u00a0Boucanier\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s de ce que nous aimions tous les deux.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cela dit (votre question), Paul n\u2019intervenait pas du tout dans le sc\u00e9nario. Il dessinait, point. Question histoire, il \u00e9tait volontairement passif. Nous avions surtout convenu une fois pour toutes de ce qu\u2019il n\u2019aimait PAS dessiner, et que j\u2019\u00e9vitais. C\u2019\u00e9tait un grand peintre, un illustrateur, un artiste au sens pur du mot. Oblig\u00e9 de faire des bandes dessin\u00e9es, il \u00e9tait content d\u2019avoir un sc\u00e9nariste qui comprenait cela, et qui, au moins, att\u00e9nuait le c\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0fabrication\u00a0\u00bb et lui donnait, par-ci, par-l\u00e0, mati\u00e8re \u00e0 faire un beau dessin. Nous en parlions en confiance. Le personnage n\u2019\u00e9tait, et n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 pour lui qu\u2019un pr\u00e9texte. Si je n\u2019ai pas \u00e9t\u00e9 le sc\u00e9nariste de cet \u00e9pisode<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>, n\u2019y voyez que le fait que j\u2019\u00e9tais surcharg\u00e9, avec la mont\u00e9e d\u2019Achille Talon, de Comanche, etc. Or Paul avait travaill\u00e9 avec Van Hamme, qui le connaissait bien lui aussi. Et de mon c\u00f4t\u00e9, j\u2019avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0donn\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb certains personnages \u00e0 Jean (Van Hamme), comme \u00ab\u00a0Domino\u00a0\u00bb, etc. Il \u00e9tait normal, et sans probl\u00e8me, que Jean Van Hamme \u00e9crive donc du \u00ab\u00a0Corentin\u00a0\u00bb.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Et voil\u00e0. Paul est mort avec, h\u00e9las, le sentiment d\u2019avoir manqu\u00e9 sa vie, de ne pas s\u2019\u00eatre accompli. Ce monde \u00e9tait trop rigoureux pour lui\u00a0; il n\u2019en a jamais compl\u00e8tement fait partie. \u00ab\u00a0Corentin\u00a0\u00bb n\u2019\u00e9tait qu\u2019une pirouette, une apparence, une illusion \u00e0 laquelle j\u2019ai essay\u00e9 modestement de donner un masque, pour les lecteurs. Il fut aussi le r\u00e9dacteur en chef du Journal de Tintin de 1965 \u00e0 1974.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Philippe Goddin (1944), professeur en arts plastiques, a r\u00e9dig\u00e9 plusieurs ouvrages en tant que critique, historien et expert en Bandes Dessin\u00e9es. Notamment les sept volumes composant \u00ab\u00a0\u00a0Herg\u00e9, Chronologie d\u2019une \u0153uvre\u00a0\u00bb, consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme la biographie la plus compl\u00e8te du dessinateur.
